WHAT IS HERNIA

Hernia is a condition wherein a body part or an internal organ squeezes or protrudes from the weakened muscular walls containing that organ. Hernias usually do not go away on their own and require surgical repair. The surgery involves pushing the protruding organ or tissue back into place and reinforcing the weakened area with mesh or other materials to prevent a recurrence.
In some cases, a watch-and-wait approach may be taken if the hernia is small and not causing any symptoms. However, this approach carries the risk of the hernia growing larger or becoming incarcerated (unable to be pushed back in).

TYPES OF HERNIA

Inguinal Hernia

Common hernia type with the lump or bulging soft tissue seen surrounding the weakened abdomen muscle. This type of hernia commonly occur in men.

1
Femoral Hernia

Type of hernia occurring in upper thigh and mainly affect women.

2
Incisional Hernia

Type of hernia that occurs due to an incision in the scar tissue.

3
4. Umbilical Hernia

In this type of hernia, the intestine of the human body expands and reaches out to the belly button area.

4
Hiatal Hernia

Type of hernia in which stomach bulges out of the weak muscular wall.

5
Epigastric Hernia

Type of hernia wherein the lump is between breastbone and belly button (the gastric region)

CAUSES

  • Excess pressure while passing stool
  • Obesity
  • Heavy weight lifting
  • Poor diet & Weak muscles

How Hernia sac is formed?

Hernia sac is formed by the inner lining of abdomen that comes out through a weak spot in peritoneum. It contains a protruded internal organs like intestine.

SYMPTOMS

  • Lump or Bulge
  • Mild to intense pain or discomfort
  • Aching or burning sensation
  • Heavy sensation in the groin
  • Redness or rashes in the affected area

DIAGNOSIS

Hernia can be diagnosed by following tests:

  • Physical test to examine the bulging
  • General scanning tests such as a CT scan, Ultrasound or MRI

DO's
Take fibre rich healthy diet
Increase fluid intake
Maintain healthy BMI (Body mass Index)
DONT's
Do not lift heavy objects
Avoid excessive alcohol intake
Avoid excessive abdominal stretching

TREATMENTS

NON SURGICAL TREATMENTS

Non-surgical treatments for hernias, as recommended by a general physician, include: Wearing supportive garments like

Truss - A type of belt worn by hernia patients under the clothes to give support and keep hernia from protruding.

Binder - A supportive abdominal belt to reduce pain. It can also be worn after incisional hernia surgery.

Corset - An innovative support to be worn by hernia patients to relieve discomfort from the hernia.

These non-surgical treatments help relieve pain and discomfort for some time when the patient is not in a condition to get permanent treatment through surgery.

SURGICAL TREATMENTS

1. Open Hernia treatment method
Under this method. Firstly, local anaesthesia is often given to numb the pain, an incision cut is made and extended or the bulging tissue is put back carefully into the abdomen. Further, the weak or sensitive area is sewed back with the help of synthetic mesh and the final stitching is done to give the treatment a proper closure.

2. Minimally invasive hernia treatment method
Under this method too. Firstly, local anaesthesia is given to numb the pain. In this not one but multiple small cuts will be made through medical instruments or Laparoscopic technique. Here, one cut is used to put the Laparoscopic tube to see the inside of the abdomen clearly and the other cuts or holes are used to do the repairing work, done through special medical equipment.

RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS

Some of the major complications associated with hernias:

  • Blockage of bowel movement
  • Hernia can get trapped
  • The tissue can stop receiving blood flow
  • Nausea
  • Intense
  • Unbearable pain

IF LEFT UNTREATED

Untreated hernia can raise some complications and most commonly it can result in cutting off the blood flow (strangulated hernia). This trapped condition of the tissue in the abdomen wall can be a threat to life. Other complications are:

  • Infection: The protruding organ or tissue can become infected
  • Incarceration: Hernia can become trapped outside the abdominal wall
  • Intestinal obstruction: A portion of the intestine becomes trapped or twisted within the hernia.

COST

The cost of treating the hernia surgically is between ₹75,000 to ₹85,000. The variable cost depend on the type of surgical procedure, hospital ,and city of operation.

Know more about Hernia

A hernia occurs in all age groups. Some very common age groups are more frequently triggered by hernia conditions. This is the age group of 40 to 60 years (Adults) and 60 years and above (Seniors). Wondering what is the main cause of Hernia Disease. Know the causes from Glamyo Experts.

Majorly, there are three very common types of hernia occurring in adults. Men and women both report hernia problems these days, but mostly hernia is found in men due to heavy weight lifting or exertion.

Depending on the gender difference and the type of hernia occurring, the cause differs. Following is the major listing of the causes.

  • Heavy weight lifting People, especially men who regularly do weight lifting work are more likely to suffer from a hernia condition. Weight lifting knowingly or unknowingly puts intense pressure on the body and its continuous effect can result in inguinal hernia.
  • Excessive pressure to the abdomen area In continuation to the above cause, weight lifting or other ways of experiencing pressure such as chronic coughing or constipation can strain the abdomen wall and weaken the muscles. This can give hernia.
  • Poor diet A healthy diet means a healthy life. So, when the diet is not taken into proper consideration or a person eats junk food, fried food or spicy food, this can cause a weak immune system and trigger the body with various ailments such as hernia.
  • Poor hygiene Equally, good hygiene is the ultimate solution to a healthy life. But, when a person neglects the importance of having a good lifestyle it can create diseases and health issues such as hernia.
  • Aging Another cause that triggers hernia is the factor that as much as the age goes up, the risk of hernia becomes more. As it has been reported that most people with hernias are either adults or seniors.
  • Muscle weakness When the immune system is triggered and the abdomen wall becomes weak, it results in muscle weakness.
  • Obesity Being overweight or simply not taking proper care of your weight can lead to multiple health issues, of which one such most commonly occurring condition is a hernia. Thus, keeping a track of your body weight and ensuring to have a balanced weight puts the person safe from hernia or relatable health conditions.
  • Pregnancy Women in pregnancy may or may not get a hernia. This completely depends on how carefully the person takes care of themselves. During this crucial time, it is strongly advised that one must not put intense pressure on the abdomen or the whole body.
  • Chronic coughing When a person is suffering from chronic coughing this increases the risk of a hernia. This reason is while coughing again and again consciously or unconsciously the person is putting excessive pressure on the abdomen which eventually results in it weakening.
  • Chronic constipation When it comes to hernia, one of the active reasons that cannot be left out is experiencing constipation for many days.

In some cases, a watch-and-wait approach is taken if the hernia is small and not causing any symptoms. However, it may increase the risk of the hernia growing larger or becoming incarcerated (unable to be pushed back in). It is better to get a doctor's consultation and get it diagnosed before complications arise.  A hernia is a common health concern. Frequently Asked Questions

The hernia is mainly caused by pressure on weakened muscles that can be present in a person since birth or may be due to aging. The weak opening allows the pushing of an organ or tissue through the spot.

The first sign of a hernia may be a lump or bulged portion in the abdominal region. The lump often disappears while lying down.

There is an aching sensation at the site of the hernia that may worsen due to heavy weight lifting and running. In some patients, there is a bulge but no pain or discomfort.

A mild hernia is not necessarily serious. But with time, it may become a complicated condition either because of strangulation or getting enlarged. Reduced blood flow to the surrounding tissue in an untreated hernia may become a life-threatening situation.

Commonly, hernia occurs in older adults. There are cases of children suffering from hernia. It depends on the type of hernia that affects people of different ages. For example, inguinal hernia occurs in children of age between 0-5 years.

If the hernia is left untreated, it may lead to life-threatening conditions like severe inflammation of the tissues in strangulated hernia and worsening of the pain. Serious health conditions make it hard to manage.

The three most common types of hernias include femoral hernia, inguinal hernia, and umbilical hernia.

To test yourself for hernia, a lump or bulge may be felt around teh pubic bone. There can be bulges at different positions in different types of hernias. Also, discomfort is felt while coughing or lifting weights.

Hernia surgery is considered a major surgery, mainly if it is done as an open surgery. Nowadays, with the advent of technology, a hernia can be repaired with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.

A person should not leave a hernia untreated as it can get complicated and become hard to manage. Many a time, people tend to delay hernia repair surgery, which decreases the quality of life. Hence, one won’t be able to lead a quality life with a hernia. It is recommended to get a doctor consultation as early as possible.
